Chapter 02 · In a few lines

Laura, in brief

You can tell Laura rides before she mentions it. It is there in the straight back, the easy balance, the way she crosses a room without once glancing at her feet. At 169 cm she is athletic and long-limbed; the light brown hair, worn long, has been bleached a shade paler by summers outdoors, and it is the green of her eyes that most people remember first. She favours clothes that move: a wrap dress, soft leather, flat boots for the walk and heels in her bag for the arrival.

Adventurous and warm, she is the companion who proposes the unexpected and then makes it work. Her energy is considerable and never tiring. Mid twenties, English, an open and bright way of speaking. Horses have been part of her life for as long as she can remember; skiing takes her to the mountains each winter; Italy, from the lakes to the small hill towns, claims every spare week. She tells travel stories well, briefly, with the dull parts left out.

In Mayfair she likes Scott's on Mount Street, ideally a seat facing the door so she can watch the arrivals, and she orders oysters and the fish of the day without hesitation. Dinner, to her, is the middle of an adventure rather than its end. It is always Laura who votes for the long way back, through Mount Street Gardens and past the lit windows around the square.

Paddington is home, a short hop from Park Lane. She takes same-day requests from midday. Her first hour is £600, and Cressida can hold the evening on the strength of a single message.

Chapter 04 · After eight

Laura, after dark

Laura's best evenings have motion in them. She might meet you at six for a walk along the edge of Hyde Park, pointing out where the riders take the sand track in the morning, then turn into Mayfair as the lamps come on. Drinks are quick and cheerful. Dinner is generous, with a bottle from the Italian north that she recommends without opening the list. She talks about spring snow in the Aosta Valley, about a horse that once refused a fence for her and never for anyone else, about the best breakfast she ever ate, in a harbour café in Liguria. The energy is infectious rather than exhausting. Before midnight you will want to plan a trip, and she will already have three suggestions.

Asked, and answered

Laura answers

Camogli, on the Ligurian coast. Painted houses, fishing boats and a focaccia I still think about on grey Mondays.

Wherever it fell last night. I follow the forecast, not a favourite resort, and I have never regretted it.

Hyde Park, if you are up early. The sand track just after dawn is the calmest London ever gets, and the horses seem to know it.
