Angelika, in brief
Guests tend to recall the dress. Cressida recalls the stance: weight balanced, shoulders easy, the readiness of someone who has spent a great many early mornings on a hard court. Angelika is 172 cm and athletic, her black hair long and perfectly straight, her eyes a direct and amused brown. She chooses one strong colour for an evening and lets it do the work, usually red, with a thin gold chain and heels low enough to walk the length of Savile Row.
Confidence is what people notice first and elegance second; what keeps a table talking past eleven is her playfulness, which arrives once she has decided she likes you. Her age, mid twenties, shows only in her stamina. She speaks English briskly, with a dry edge, and she argues about contemporary art fairly, having usually read the catalogue essay you skipped. Tennis keeps her early. Jazz keeps her late, preferably in a small basement where the bass player is near enough to watch his hands.
A W1 evening with Angelika tends to open at Hauser & Wirth on Savile Row, on a Thursday when a new show spills onto the pavement and nobody minds a late arrival. She finds the one work in the room worth standing before, explains it in three sentences, then turns you towards Mount Street for supper. Should the night stay warm, a cab east to a cellar with a trio; if not, the quiet bar of your hotel.
Home is a few streets from the square, so arrivals in W1K and W1J are quick, and the Mayfair page names the hotels she knows best. Her first hour is £600. Write to Cressida through booking with the night you have in mind.

Angelika, after dark
Take a Thursday at the end of September. Angelika meets you at the gallery door rather than in the lobby, because she likes to watch how a guest looks at a picture before deciding where he should eat. Twenty minutes among the canvases, a glass of whatever the gallery is pouring, then the short stroll down Savile Row while the tailors' windows go dark one by one. Supper is chosen for its noise level as much as its kitchen: enough hum to feel alive, enough hush to hear a punchline. Talk runs from the show to the club match she lost on Sunday to a saxophonist she expects to be famous by spring. Around eleven she can tell whether the night wants music or a nightcap, and she is seldom wrong.
Angelika answers
Whoever the table has just dismissed. Usually they have seen one photograph of the work. Ten minutes in front of the real thing changes most minds, occasionally even mine.
If they bring their own racket and accept that I keep the score honestly. Nobody has yet asked for a rematch in the same week.
The bass. When the bass player is enjoying himself, the band follows him, and a good room follows the band.
