Chapter 02 · In a few lines

Jasmin, in brief

Small in stature and impossible to overlook, Jasmin stands 160 cm, petite, with long straight chestnut hair and brown eyes that always seem a moment from laughter. She dresses with a light hand: silk in sapphire or garnet, a fine chain, heels that add a few welcome inches. There is always a scent, and you will want to ask what it is.

Bubbly and quick, she has a playful streak that surfaces early and never wears thin. She is in her early twenties and talks, in English, at a lively clip, asking questions in a way that makes people glad to answer. Perfume is her private study; she can pick out the notes in most fragrances and holds firm opinions on a good many of them. Mixology is the other science. Salsa is the release, a class each week and a Latin night whenever a friend can be persuaded along.

Mayfair has an obvious room for her, and it is the Connaught Bar on Carlos Place, where the martini trolley is wheeled to the table and your drink is built in front of you, the choice of bitters as ceremonious as any perfume counter. Jasmin will want to understand every step. If the bartender is in a generous mood she may also ask which of his bitters he likes least, and why.

Soho is home, and her nights start late, from about nine and often the same day. Piccadilly is where most of her W1 evenings begin; one hour with her is £600, and a message to Cressida does the rest.

Chapter 04 · After eight

Jasmin, after dark

Jasmin likes a night that starts late and gathers speed. She arrives around nine, bright eyed, having already decided what you should drink first. The opening round is a small experiment: two cocktails side by side so you can compare the gin, the vermouth, the twist. She explains what the bartender just did and why it worked, then stops explaining and simply enjoys it. Supper is light and shared, plates in the middle of the table. If there is music later she will find it, and she will teach you a salsa step in the gap between two tables whether or not you consider yourself a dancer. Nobody stays self-conscious around her for long. She makes the whole evening feel like a small, happy conspiracy.

Asked, and answered

Jasmin answers

Fig leaf. Green, milky, a little strange. It smells like a garden at the end of a hot day, and I wear it all September.

Stirred, if there is no juice in it. Shaking a martini is a small crime against the vermouth.

The basic step, yes, in about three minutes. Everything after that needs a proper floor and a braver partner, although plenty of guests find the courage.
